Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland Grenfell Campus
Forestry Center Tour

Forestry BuildingWelcome to our virtual tour of the newest building on campus, the Forest Centre. The Forest Centre was officially opened on May 8th, 1998.

The Centre was designed by architect John Hearn, who created a distinctive atmosphere for the building by using the triangular silhouette of coniferous species as the central motif in the design.

Forestry GreenhouseOutside the building there is a greenhouse. It will be used to start many of the plants for the campus grounds. It also shelters the skylight over the underground walkway between the Forest Centre and the Fine Arts Building.

On entering the building you find yourself in an open atrium with huge windows that overlook the city and the Bay of Islands. Just inside the atrium, there is a variety of plant species.

Forestry ArtworkAs you continue through the atrium, you will pass a beautiful mosaic artwork created by Krissie Worthman, a Grenfell Visual Arts graduate. Krissie's piece is a photographic work that uses a variety of layering techniques. She photographed a variety of images she felt represented the forestry theme and then used a graphic image of a pine cone as the basis of the work - the result is an image which reads on two levels.

Forestry BooksOne wing of the building houses the offices of the Canadian Forestry Service. In addition to staff offices there is a reception area, library, conference room and workshops. Research facilites include a remote sensing lab, a pathology lab and and ecology (wildlife, insects, soil) lab.

The other wing of the building houses the offices of the Model Forest and the Memorial Forestry Programme. The MUN facility includes a number of teaching labs. They are used to teach a variety of classes including physiology, climatology and forest management. The facility also includes two seminar rooms, a Forestry Atriumlecture theatre that seats 43, teaching labs, a mud room, offices for SWGC Faculty and Staff, as well as an office for a visiting scientist or graduate student. The facility also includes a forest research lab and pictured here, the soil/earth sciences lab which is part of the Environmental Sciences Programme at the College. It is used for the study of the biology, chemistry and physics of soils, including forest soils and other geologic material.

The Forest Centre is connected to the campus by outdoor paths as well as an underground walkway.
