International Student Orientation 2014
 
Thursday, August 28th
9:00--10:00am         Breakfast (Main Floor Lounge, Residence Complex)
                                    Start your orientation off with a free Pancake breakfast at 1st floor of the Residence Complex.
 
10:00-11:00pm        Campus Tour/ Campus Card and Library Account Setup
                             Meet at Student Services Office. Join in on one of these sessions and get a tour of the Grenfell Facilities. This is a great opportunity to see where your classes will be held so bring along your class schedule.
 
11:00-12:00am      Account Setup (AS364)
                                    Get help setting up your students email account and WIFI.
 
12:00-1:00pm          Understanding Your Health Insurance Coverage/Scotia Bank Pre-Setup (AS364)
                             Hear about your health insurance coverage and learn if you are eligible for the FREE Newfoundland Medical Care Plan.
                                                               
1:00-2:00pm             Let’s get electric! (AS328)
Adjusting to a new place can sometimes be very overwhelming. This session will help you to recognize when you are experiencing culture shock and what to do.
               
2:20-3:50pm             Corner Brook Plaza
                             Take the city bus to the Corner Brook Plaza and get a walkthrough of the Corner Brook Plaza to see services there available to you.
 
4:00-6:00pm          Murphy Square
                             Stop by Wal-Mart and Dominion Grocery and pick up some much needed supplies.
 
         6:00pm                      Return to Campus – Open Evening
 
Friday, August 29th

                             Take the city bus to the Scotia Bank to set up your bank account. Please bring along Passport, Study Permit and Letter of Acceptance to Grenfell Campus. 
 
            5:30pm                      Return to Campus
 
6:00-7:30pm              Living at Grenfell
Join us for Pizza with staff of the Student Housing Office and members of the Grenfell Campus Student Union. This is an open session to ask any questions that you may have during your first few days.
 
Saturday, August 30th

Monday, September 1st
2:00-4:30 pm         English Placement Test (AS350)
                             If you were required to provide proof of English proficiency for admission to Memorial University, you must write the English placement test. This test will determine which English class you will be placed into.
 
Tuesday, September 2nd
9:00-12:00pm          Registration AS234B (New International Students Only)
2:00-4:00pm          Bring along your passport and study permit and register with the International Student Services Office. No appointments necessary.
 
Wednesday, September 3rd    
3:30-4:30pm            Welcome ceremony (AS2C02)
International/Indigenous students welcome ceremony.           
 
Thursday, September 4th                
11:30-12:30pm        Understanding Your Health Insurance Coverage (AS2016)
                             Hear about your health insurance coverage and learn if you are eligible for the FREE Newfoundland Medical Care Plan
 
3:30-4:30pm             Coffee House (AS2C02)
Join us for our weekly coffee house. The Grenfell Campus Student Union (GCSU) and the GCSU International Student Caucus will be talking about how you can get involved on campus. BYOM (Bring Your Own Mug) Refreshments will be provided. 
 
Friday, September 5th 
3:30-4:30pm            No Just Your Ordinary Library Tour! (Library Entrance)
                             Ferriss Hodgett Library is not just your ordinary library and likewise their services are no like no other. New International Students are invited to take part in this very interactive tour of the Ferriss Hodgett Library. Snacks and Drinks will be provided.
 
Thursday, September 11th     
3:30-4:30pm             Diversity Hour (AS2C02)
Diversity Hour is an informal hour where international and national students can meet, create friendships and expand their network.  BYOM (Bring Your Own Mug) Refreshments will be provided.
 
Saturday, September 13th      
9:00-6:00pm              Woods Island Tour, Crystal Waters Boat Tour – New Students
                                    This is a Free Event!!!! You must pack your lunch and snacks. This is a boat tour that will embark on an island. There will be no restaurants or stores to purchase food items. Please sign up in Student Services (AS234) by Monday, September 8th, 4:00pm. Space is limited! The bus leaves the Library Entrance at 9:00am Sharp!!!!! Dress warmly, jacket, hat, scarf, gloves and it can sometimes get windy on the boat.

 

 

 

We hope that the Orientation events and services will help you adjust to living in a new culture and environment as well as university life at Grenfell. It is our hope that through these events and services you will be prepared to begin a meaningful and memorable experience at our campus.
