Why Study Psychology @Grenfell?

  • Carolyn Mouland
B.A. (Hons), JD (Juris Doctor with Distinction)

I first attended Grenfell with the intention of later transferring to the St. John's campus but Grenfell's Psychology program persuaded me to stay. Psychology at Grenfell offers a close-knit, supportive community that endows students with all the requisite tools to succeed in their chosen career path. The privilege of knowing your professors (whose doors are always open) on a first-name basis is a unique advantage. Grenfell's Psychology program provides a personal, individualized approach that makes each student feel valued and encourages everyone to maximize and obtain their potential.

I firmly believe that Psychology at Grenfell instilled me with a first-rate education that fostered the fundamental skills and abilities necessary to attend and excel at law school. I am currently completing my articling for admission to the practice of law. I utilize my Psychology degree every day in an array of tasks - whether through my interactions with colleagues, clients, observing the demeanour and accuracy of a witness' testimony, or when drafting a research memo to a partner. I am grateful and indebted to the staff and faculty for the experience and knowledge gained from attending Psychology at Grenfell.

  • Loni Slade
B.Sc. (Hons), M.A. Health Psychology, MUN Med Class of 2016

I began my university experience close to home by attending the Grenfell Campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland. Grenfell offered the perfect blend of small class sizes & dedicated and truly fantastic professors, and it was where my love for science and psychology was sparked. My intention, admittedly, was to spend my first year only in Corner Brook and then move to the St. John's campus. Imagine my surprise when I realized I could complete an entire science degree in psychology with honours at Grenfell, and love every minute of it. I was challenged academically during my time at Grenfell while also receiving ample support and guidance to pursue broader educational horizons that ultimately included a master's degree in health psychology (UBC) and a doctor of medicine degree from Memorial (Class of 2016). I likely would not have gotten to where I am today without the many opportunities (e.g., working as a research assistant, as a statistics tutor) provided by receiving my undergraduate degree through a small and smoothly-run program. For example, I was able to work in Dr. Wright's lab for several summers and then presented a research poster at a national conference. Such an experience equipped me with the skills to later competently and confidently present at several international conferences during my graduate training. My former undergraduate profs, mentors, and classmates have been and continue to be absolutely fundamental in shaping my adventures in learning thus far, and I would encourage anyone seeking a unique and rewarding undergraduate experience to consider the opportunities that abound at the Grenfell Campus. It was the perfect fit.

    B.Sc., B.N., R.N.

I graduated from Grenfell Campus in 2007 with a B.Sc. in Psychology. I then completed a fast track Bachelor of Nursing degree from the Western Regional School of Nursing in 2010. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the West Coast campuses of MUN. The small class sizes and the accessibility of the instructors made it easier to succeed. My degrees have helped me to work and do further training in various areas of Nursing, including Public Health, Post-Anesthetic Care, and Medical/Surgical Nursing. I really enjoy being a Registered Nurse and I am very grateful I was able to study and now to work in my hometown of Corner Brook.
