The first year of study at University can be a bit daunting at times. These tips can help you with your psychology classes, and other classes too.

  1. Read the assigned chapters in the text BEFORE the lectures on the material. This will give you some background and help you understand the lectures.
  2. You cannot get by without reading the text. Material in the text is fair game for tests and exams even if it is not mentioned in class.
  3. Take notes in class. You will find, depending on your professor, that your instructor may not use PowerPoint or write much on the board. This is not a signal to sit back and relax. Pick out the important points and write them down.
  4. Look over your notes after each class.
  5. Cramming for tests (studying for 5 hours the night before the test) is not very efficient or effective. Instead, study for, say, 30 minutes each night for a week before the test.
  6. If you do not understand something in class, ask a question. Do not be afraid that you will look silly. In any class there is a pretty good chance that someone else has the same question.
  7. If you are a bit intimidated in about asking questions in class, ask your question to the professor after class, or during the prof’s office hours.
  8. Multiple choice tests are not easy. They aren’t hard either. They are like any other type of test. You need to be prepared. The Learning Centre provides helpful (and free) seminars on test-taking and studying. The Learning Centre can also help you find a tutor.
  9. Take advantages of the many services the Learning Centre offers.
  10. Come to class!
  11. Enjoy yourself.
