For those wishing to arrive by surface travel, there is a ferry service between North Sydney, Nova Scotia, and Port-aux-Basques, Newfoundland. The ferry service is operated by Marine Atlantic (www.marine-atlantic.ca) and the crossing between the two ports takes about six hours. The ferries are equipped with sleeping accommodations for an additional fee. The Trans-Canada highway to North Sydney is in very good condition. The highway ends at the ferry dock. On the Newfoundland side, the continuation of the Trans-Canada highway to Corner Brook is also in very good condition. In Newfoundland, drivers should be especially alert for moose on the highway if driving at dawn or dusk.
