The island of Newfoundland and the southern Labrador coast has its own time zone which is 1.5 hours ahead of the Eastern Time Zone. For example, 11:00 in Corner Brook will be only 09:30 EST. |
Though located on the same latitude as Paris, France, Spring and early Summer in Corner Brook are cool. Bring thick sweaters and waterproof jackets. For those taking a post-conference tour, hiking boots are also advisable. |
Conference participants should be aware that the only two cellphone service providers in western Newfoundland at this time are Bell Aliant and Telus (and their affiliates). Rogers has limited service in the Corner Brook area. Our American colleagues should ensure that they have an All-North America coverage and that their telephone company has links with one or other of the companies serving this region. |
MasterCard and Visa credit cards are accepted throughout the area. Magnetic stripe - “Swipe” - cards seem to be still acceptable, though most stores have “Chip-and-Pin” card readers. |
All the major Canadian banks have branches in Corner Brook: Bank of Montreal (BMO); Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC); Scotiabank; and Toronto-Dominion Bank (TD). |
Few establishments accept other than Canadian dollars. |
