Students helping Students
Students Helping StudentsStudents of Western Regional School of Nursing obtained a great deal of clinical experience through their participation in the Sir Wilfred Grenfell College annual health fair. The nursing students distributed health promotion information to participants regarding healthy living issues. They used an alcohol awareness booth to expose students to the effects of alcohol through the use of MADD goggles. “Mocktails” (which are non-alcoholic beverages) were served to participants as suggestions for alternatives to alcoholic beverages. Doris Edwards from the Tobacco Free Network distributed information on the effects of tobacco. Stephanie Buckle (Regional Nutritionist) distributed pamphlets on nutrition specifically designed for university students. Carla Gilliam (Community Health Nurse) provided information on cervical screening initiatives available to the university population Overall it was a great learning experience for the nursing students as well as all participants. Funding for this initiative was made available through the Western Regional Wellness Coalition and the Sir Wilfred Grenfell College – I Fell for Grenfell Program.
