Proud to be Nurses
Proud to be NursesNurses giving back was the theme of a Panel Discussion recently held at the Western Regional School of Nursing. A group of twelve high school students attended a two-day mini-enrichment program where they had the pleasure of attending a panel discussion. Jim Evans spoke to the students about his experience as a nurse in a Heart Transplant Unit and his present administrative role with Telehealth . Gary Bradbury, a Nurse Practitioner from Deer Lake spoke to the students about advanced nursing practice and the role of  Nurse Practitioners in Primary Health Care. Julia Young rounded out the discussion with her enthusiasm for Community Health Nursing. Hilda Bellows, a staff nurse for many years now finds herself working in the Emergency Department. She spoke to the students about the SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) role that nurses in the western region have recently assumed. Sherry Rumbolt was a terrific Moderator for the session. She spoke about her career in the Operating Room and used her motivational skills to discuss the many faces of Nursing. Judith Strickland is presently enrolled in a Doctoral Program and spoke to the audience about her passion for Cancer Care Nursing, Nursing Education and life-long learning. The presenters revealed a very clear picture of the diversity of the nursing profession which motivated this group of grade seven to nine students to think about a career in Nursing. What a wonderful tribute to one’s profession.
