Mini-Enrichment

Mini-EnrichmentTwo days of fun and excitement resulted in newly made friendships and an awesome learning experience for twelve enthusiastic high school students. These grade seven to nine students came from Port-Aux-Basque to Daniel’s Harbour to attend a Mini-enrichment course offered by Western Regional School of Nursing called “One Career, Many Choices”. Faculty welcomed the students by playing games which helped them become acquainted with each other. They were treated to a tour of the Nursing School and Library facilities and then attended laboratory sessions. They practiced giving injections; removing sutures; taking blood pressures; using casting equipment, oxygen and suction equipment, otoscopes, tuning forks, and reflex hammers. They were shown a defibrillation machine and had an opportunity to use the device. The laboratory sessions seemed to be the highlight of their experience. They were introduced to the topics of alcohol, drugs and tobacco through a trivia game and the use of MADD Goggles (Mothers against Drunk Drivers). The goggles are designed to alter vision in the same manner it would be altered after drinking alcohol. It was a very effective tool in showing the students how reflexes slow under the influence and this gave faculty an opportunity to discuss the dangers of alcohol use within this impressionable age group. They learned a great deal and thoroughly enjoyed the session. They listened intently to a panel discussion where they were exposed to the experiences of a Nurse Practitioner, and nurses who have worked in Cancer Care, the Operating Room, Community Health, Telehealth, Emergency and staff nursing positions.  Pictures taken of students throughout the two days were used to produce posters/collages to bring back to their schools. The two days ended with a graduation cake, presentation of certificates and a social. Faculty were very impressed with the energy and enthusiasm of the high school students and look forward to seeing some of them enroll in the BN(Collaborative) Program.
