Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland Grenfell Campus
Master of Arts - Environmental Policy

Welcome to Environmental Policy at Memorial University of Newfoundland!

The M.A. in Environmental Policy is a unique initiative spearheaded by the Environmental Policy Institute. It builds on the core strengths of the Grenfell Campus in environmental programming including environmental policy, environmental studies, environmental science and sustainable resource management.

The M.A. in Environmental Policy has been designed to integrate these diverse fields of study and fill the gap in environmental policy expertise locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. It combines a Thesis-based Program (2 years) or a Research Paper-based Program (1 year) with an Internship to offer students a means of bridging the policy-science divide while providing a valuable experiential learning opportunity to ensure exposure to challenges faced by practitioners. Such a structure ensures an attractive and relevant program for students and mid-career professionals who wish to return to upgrade their credentials.

The advantages of graduate study in environmental policy at Memorial include:

  • Unique program in Canada solely focused on environmental policy.
  • Rigorous program with inter/multi-disciplinary focus. Contributing faculty are from diverse backgrounds such as public policy, public administration, political science, geography, economics, urban and regional planning, forestry, water resources and biology.
  • Program flexibility and choice. Thesis and Research Paper options. Full or part-time study.
  • Gain work experience while studying through a 12 week Internship with a government office, non-governmental organization, community group or business.
  • Financial assistance for eligible M.A. students.
  • Excellent faculty with a wide range of research interests from water resources, energy policy, food security, sustainability, risk governance, community-based resources governance and forestry.
  • Excellent library resources. Ranked third in Canada for library holdings per student in Maclean’s 2009 University Survey.
  • Small campus. With approximately 1,300 students, the Grenfell Campus is an ideal size to allow students to work closely with faculty in pursuit of their studies.
  • Multilevel linkages. Many opportunities exist to form linkages and work with personnel in several provincial and federal government departments, as well as several local and regional environmental non-governmental organizations.
  • Expertise and reputation. The Grenfell Campus, located in Corner Brook, NL, is renowned for its environmental programming in environmental studies, environmental science, sustainable resource management and tourism.
  • Location, location, location. The Grenfell Campus is also ideally located on the west coast of the Newfoundland and Labrador which offers many research opportunities and environmental amenities such as national parks and international hiking trails (e.g., Appalachian Trail).
