The Humanities Logo

The Humanities Logo was created by Matthew Hollett, a former student in Grenfell's Visual Arts programme. He calls it Atlas Within and information about this work can be found on his personal webpage: http://www.matthewhollett.com/.

Of course while all artists may interpret their own work in their own way, others may also have an interpretation. For the Humanities programme, Mr. Hollett's work could be interpreted in the following way. The human creature in the centre represents the focus of our discipline. The figure is reaching up in a gesture, perhaps, of searching for knowledge. Surrounding the figure are eight segments, which represent the eight individual disciplines that comprise the Humanities programme at Grenfell: classics, English, French, history, philosophy, religious studies, theatre history and visual art history. The trees within these segments are reminiscent of the tree of knowledge (a common metaphor). For these reasons, Mr. Hollett's work of art is a fine symbol for the Humanities programme.

We are grateful to Matthew Hollett for permission to use his work.
