Theatre at Grenfell is a four year BFA degree in either Acting or Stagecraft. Students entering the Stagecraft stream will experience four years of training in technical theatre: including Stage Management, Props, Lighting, Sound, Carpentry, and Wardrobe.
As our students progress through the program, they will continue to take regular stagecraft classes which will continue to develop skills in these core areas. The program is designed so that students build on skills over time, and graduate fully capable of entering the professional theatre.
Starting in second year, students are assigned responsibilities on our mainstage productions. It is very much the philosophy of the program that a vital component of learning in the theatre is to actually do theatre. Our mainstage production series is one of the busiest of any theatre program in the country, precisely because we want all our students to have the experience of working 'live'.
In third year, students will take master classes from professional artists who work with our students on a shorter and more intense basis. Previous Master Teachers have included master carpenters, prop builders, and lighting and sound designers who have worked with companies as varied as the National Arts Centre in Ottawa to Cirque de Soleil.
Finally, all theatre students finish their degrees going to Harlow, England. There our stagecraft students will assume responsibility for a specific area of the production and, depending on personal interest and aptitude may even be asked to design for the production.
It is a varied and demanding program, but one we believe produces a well-rounded theatre technician who can respond to many challenges and who is ready to enter the professional theatre.
