First Year StudentsIf you’re serious about studying the environment, you couldn’t select a better place than Grenfell College. In western Newfoundland, as in few other places in Canada, the economy is resource-based and focused on the environment. Forestry, fishing (both commercial and sport), and tourism are all vital to the area’s economy.

Our environmental studies programme is designed for students who want to study environmental issues and contribute to designing the solutions of the future. The courses you would take come from numerous areas of study, including geography, economics, political science, outdoor recreation, folklore and religious studies.

Within our programme, we offer two concentrations: environmental perspectives and outdoor environmental pursuits.

Environmental perspectives is designed to help students develop a comprehensive understanding of environmental issues and controversies.

Outdoor environmental pursuits explores the how's and whys of various outdoor skills, for example, students will learn about sea kayaking and cross country skiing.

Students entering the environmental studies programme in their first year should consult with the Chair of Environmental Studies, Dr. Gabriela Sabau. She will help students determine which concentration would best suit their individual preferences and which courses should be taken within each year.
