Our industrial composter was engineered by AFG-Brome which is a Québec based company.
The composter works by spinning at specific intervals in order to properly mix the compost. This spinning speeds up the composting process and within two weeks the organic waste that was placed in one end comes out the other as soil. The composter runs on small engine, and can be set to specific spin cycles depending on the type of organic waste. The bins are weighted, and then placed on a lift which dumps the waste into the composter.
The composter is able to handle up to 100 metric tonnes of organic waste per year, and has the ability to compost almost anything, from vegetable scraps and yard waste, to full animal carcasses and bones.
This kind of composter is the first in Newfoundland and will reduce the waste coming from Grenfell Campus by at least 20%.
