Compost At Grenfell
For the last two years Grenfell’s industrial composter has been successfully up and running, operating all year round. Thanks to you, we have successfully diverted over 44 tons of organic waste from our landfills.
We have successfully become self-sufficient, being able to use the compost in our gardens and lawn, meaning your waste is helping to make our campus even more beautiful. But this is only the beginning. Our composter can process up to 100 tons of waste per year. Let’s all work together to put as much compostable material as possible into the bins at Grenfell.
You can see the green bins placed all around campus and in student residences, most recently in the brand new residence complex. Now everyone on campus has the ability to compost. Labels have been placed on the green bins which will tell you what can and cannot go into the composter. But you don’t even really need that because composting at Grenfell Campus is easy! Simply put any food waste, paper towels and napkins into the bins. Unlike smaller residential composters we are able to take meats and diary, but please remember that the composter cannot digest plastic, Styrofoam, metal or glass.
Chalet residents have been provided with small brown bins. Keep these in your kitchen and when they are full, simply empty them into one of the green bins located outside the chalets. Our staff will take it from there.
If you live off campus you can participate too. Bring your organic waste from home and put it in any green bin. You can empty your own bin into any of our larger ones or just bring the items in a compostable bag.
Let’s all get together and build on Grenfell’s reputation as the greenest campus in Newfoundland. And let’s make others green with envy! Let’s all do our part in turning organic waste into fresh, healthy compost that will help renew our environment. Watch for ongoing promotions throughout the year and help spread the word on waste reduction.
You are a big part of the success of the Grenfell Composting Project and we appreciate your input. Please forward your ideas, suggestions and questions to email@example.com
