 Guidelines for Oral Presentations

Skip Navigation LinksGrenfell Campus / Division of Arts / Historical Studies / Guidelines for Oral Presentations

An oral presentation, worth 30% of a student’s total grade, is a requirement of History 4950. The following is a set of guidelines for students preparing such a presentation.

  • The presentation will be given to all faculty and students who choose to attend. Its purpose is to aid the presenter in the drafting of his or her final version of the Individual Project, by furnishing the candidate with clear advice two weeks before this final draft is due. As well, such occasions are intended to acquaint students who are in an earlier stage of the program with what will be expected of them later.
  • The presenter should normally give a 20 minute talk. This will normally comprise a brief summary of the first draft, followed by a discussion about the origins, research and development of his or her project, including such things as::
    a) how and why the topic was chosen;
    b) the courses and evidence upon which the project was based;
    c) the central issues at the heart of the project;
    d) the extent to which the shape of the project changed over time;
    e) any problems encountered either in research or writing;
    f) how these problems were overcome;
    g) any problems that remain to be solved; advice to those who will follow in
    later terms

    (NOTE: Emphasis should always be placed on categories B and C)
  • The presentation will then be followed by a question period, during which the presenter will respond to any questions from faculty or fellow students.

    STUDENTS WILL BE GRADED ON THE DEGREE OF CLARITY AND PREPARATION THEY DISPLAY, NOT ON THEIR "STAGE PRESENCE".
