Research and Writing Information

A student's guide to writing essays in history
This guide provides students with direction on the basic ingredients of a research essay. Explanations are provided for such things as "thesis", "footnotes", the use of quotations, the function of an introduction, and so on.

Writing papers of literary analysis
This guide is provided at the Western Michigan University web page. It is really designed for English students rather than for History students. Still, the basic principles of good writing and analysis cross disciplinary boundaries, and students may find the advice here useful.

Style Guides
There are all sorts of writing and research resources "out there', both on-line and in print. This link will take you to a list of the most reliable and most widely available ones.

Reader's guide to the history of Newfoundland and Labrador to 1869
This site is maintained by Prof. Janzen. It is a fairly exhaustive and detailed annotated bibliography on printed journal articles, books, dissertations and atlases devoted to (or carrying material about) Newfoundland history up to 1869.

Bibliography of Western Newfoundland
This bibliography was developed by students under the direction and guidance of Dr. Baehre.

Colonial Office 194 series, Newfoundland, original correspondence, 1696-1909
As part of a continuing project, students under the direction of Prof. Olaf Janzen are compiling Finding Aids for the CO 194 papers for the period 1696 to the nineteenth century. This is an on-going project, so that only a portion (slightly over seventy) of the available volumes have been completed so far. More will be posted as they are added.

Colonial Secretary's Letterbooks
This is an online finding aid for one of the more important resources for students and scholars researching the early modern history of Newfoundland. The Letterbooks are a series of volumes dating back to 1749 into which the governor's clerk or secretary copied letters, orders, proclamations, trial transcripts, etc.; these provide a rich insight into daily events and activities in Newfoundland. The originals are at the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland & Labrador; the early volumes are available on microfilm in the Ferriss Hodgett Library, Grenfell Campus.

Reading Old Handwriting
Doing primary research using copies of original documents can be a challenge because the handwriting is often very different from what we are accustomed to seeing today. The National Archives in the United Kingdom offers an on-line tutorial in "palaeography," the study of old handwriting, which may help you learn to read the handwriting found in documents written in English between 1500 and 1800.

History on the Internet This site is under continuous construction and revision, providing dozens of links to useful web pages devoted to a broad range of historical periods and topics. If you are doing a research page in History at Grenfell Campus, you may find this useful.
