This is an opera that was produced in the 1960s concerning a famous witch trial in seventeenth-century France. This opera depicts the bizarre witch trial involving a convent of reputedly possessed Ursuline nuns and a priest accused of practicing witchcraft and facilitating the nuns' possession. The trial was much contested in its time and had an "afterlife" of sorts in that the affair was used later to condemn the witch-hunts and the abuse of judicial procedure and state power; even in the twentieth century, the trial has been applied to critique implicitly totalitarian regimes and dubious judicial "witch-hunts."
The production was staged in Hamburg, with Tatiana Troyanos, Andrzej Hiolski, and Bernard Ładysz in the title roles. This opera is not suitable for young audiences; the content is disturbing.
